As part of your study, you may be asked to participate in one or more online exams. The exams may be conducted using the Examplify application or via the Learning Management System (LMS) and may be invigilated or non-invigilated.

Preparing for an online exam

Preparing for an online exam is very similar to preparing for a print exam, so all of your usual good study habits and exam preparation activities still apply. However, there are some additional things to be aware of with online exams and these guides and resources are designed to assist you:

Preparing for your Examplify online exam

ExamSoft allows you to complete exams on your Mac or Windows desktop or laptop in a secure, stable, offline environment.

There are three elements to ExamSoft:

  1. Examplify – the application used to download and complete exams.

  2. ExamID – the application used to verify your identification to allow you to complete your exam.

  3. ExamMonitor – the application that monitors your activity during your online exam to ensure the validity of the submission.

To participate in an ExamSoft exam, you'll be asked to download your exam prior to the exam day. You'll also be provided with a secure password via the LMS to access the exam at the scheduled exam time, and will be required to upload your answers after the exam. Access to the internet is only required to download, commence and upload the exam. You can sit your exam without a continuous Wi-Fi connection.

To complete your LMS exam, you'll need a device that can access the internet throughout the exam and can access the LMS as you have for online learning during the semester.

Examplify - Minimum specification requirements

  • My computer does not meet the minimum specifications for Examplify, what can I do?
    You can use a borrowed laptop from a friend or family member if it meets the minimum system requirements. However, the laptop owner cannot be registered for the same units as the borrower and there can be no exam time conflicts. Alternatively, if you do not have access to a suitable device, complete this Qualtrics form to request access to a loan device.

Examplify - Download issues

  • I can't log in to the ExamSoft portal
    When logging in to the ExamSoft portal, you will be prompted to enter your Pheme credentials (student number and Pheme password). Refer to Pheme student help if you’re experiencing issues with your Pheme account. If you’re experiencing issues logging into the ExamSoft portal, try clearing your browser cache or using a browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
  • I’m having trouble downloading Examplify on my computer

    First, you must be connected to the internet and you will need to check your computer meets the minimum requirements to install and run the Examplify software. If your computer meets these requirements and you are having trouble downloading the software due to a slow internet connection, you will need to use an alternative connection. You will require a reliable internet connection which meets the minimum requirements of a 2 Mbps upload speed in order to:

    • register for the first time
    • download an exam
    • complete the ID verification
    • upload an exam

    It is recommended, where possible, that your device is connected via Ethernet cable or, if using Wi-Fi, you have a high signal strength. Test your internet connection speed by using a site such as www.speedtest.net.

    If you don’t have access to a reliable internet connection or a suitable device to complete your online exam, complete this Qualtrics form to request access to a loan device.

    Depending on the browser you’re using, you’ll find the download file will be saved and accessed differently. More information can be found in this article.

  • I’m receiving a message that ‘Windows protected your computer’ when I download Examplify

    Follow the instructions below to proceed:

    1. Expand the text by clicking More info
    2. Select Run Anyway

    The installer file will now run and once the installation is complete, you can launch Examplify from your desktop or via the Start > Programs menu.

Examplify - Installation issues

  • I’m having trouble installing Examplify on my computer
    First, you must be connected to the internet and you will need to check your computer meets the minimum requirements to install and run the Examplify software. To install Examplify, you must have sufficient privileges on your computer to install the software. If you’re still experiencing difficulty installing Examplify, refer to the following FAQs.
  • I’m unable to launch the Examplify installer on a Mac

    If you’re receiving an error message stating the installer can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software, you will need to adjust some settings.

    Follow the link below for your version of MacOS to allow installers.

    Alternatively, you can manually allow individual installers to run on a case-by-case basis by following these instructions.

  • I’m using Windows 10 but am unable to install or run Examplify

    Examplify will only run on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10 (versions 1803, 1809, 1903 or 1909 only). To identify which version you have, follow the instructions below:

    1. Go to the Windows Start menu (select Windows icon on bottom right or press the Windows button on your keyboard)
    2. Type in ‘winver’ (without quotes), press Enter

    Alternate versions of Windows 10, such as Windows RT and Windows 10 S, are not supported.

    Support can also only be provided for genuine English versions of Windows.

  • When trying to install Examplify, I receive a 1603 or 1920 error message
    1. Check that your anti-virus is not blocking access – see next FAQ titled 'My anti-virus software is blocking my computer from running Examplify'
    2. Run the Examplify installer again (you may need to download the installer again via the Examplify portal) and follow the installation steps.
  • My anti-virus software is blocking my computer from running Examplify
    Anti-virus software may prevent your computer from properly running Examplify. Examsoft recommends anti-virus software is disabled when running Examplify in exam situations. It’s important that anti-virus software is re-enabled as soon as possible following an exam. For more information on how to disable common anti-virus software, refer to this article.

Examplify - Issues running Examplify

  • I’m having problems taking a photo for my baseline in Examplify
    Ensure you are running the latest version (2.6.2 as of April 2020) of Examplify and your webcam is operating properly. Check your surroundings to ensure there is adequate light on your face with minimal back lighting. For more information, refer to this article.
  • Can I use multiple monitors/displays?

    Examplify does not support multiple monitors. Any monitors in addition to the primary monitor will be disconnected when Examplify is run.

  • When I open Examplify, I receive an Application’s Service Unavailable message in Windows
    1. Go to the Windows Start menu (select Windows icon on bottom right or press the Windows button on your keyboard)
    2. Type in ‘service’ (without quotes), press Enter
    3. Find the item named ‘ExamplifyService’
    4. Double click the ‘ExamplifyService’. This will open a new window. Ensure the ‘Startup type’ is set to ‘Automatic’. Select Apply. Select Start to start the service manually, and select OK.

    If you still receive the error message, follow these instructions:

    1. Check that your anti-virus is not blocking access – See FAQ above titled 'My anti-virus software is blocking my computer from running Examplify' in the section Examplify - Installation issues
    2. Re-install Examplify (you may need to download the installer again via the Examplify portal or Software Download website). Also see FAQ below titled 'How do I perform a clean install of Examplify?'
  • I receive an ‘Internal inconsistency’ error when running Examplify
    If you receive an ‘Internal inconsistency’ error message when running Examplify, try doing a clean install of Examplify – See FAQ below titled 'How do I perform a clean install of Examplify?'
  • I receive a prompt stating my system does not meeting the minimum screen resolution requirements of 1280x768 in Windows

    To resolve this issue, follow these instructions.

    1. Close Examplify
    2. Right-click any free area of your desktop and select Display settings
    3. Locate the 'Resolution' section and ensure your screen resolution is 1280x768 or higher
    4. Locate the ‘Scale and layout’ section; the value must be set at 100% (anything greater than this may result in text in Examplify being cut off e.g. timer, tools, etc
    5. Close the Display Settings window
    6. Open Examplify and log in again
  • When I open Examplify, I receive a MSVCR100.dll error in Windows
    When installing Examplify, you may encounter an error message stating that the program cannot be run due to a missing 'msvcr100.dll.’ This message is caused by a missing Windows component not being present on your computer. To resolve this issue, install the Microsoft 2010 C++ redistributable (x86) package from Microsoft's website to your device. If you receive an error that a newer version of the application is already installed, you will need to uninstall the currently installed version via ‘programs and features’ or ‘add or remove programs’.
  • Examplify will not start on my Mac

    If, when opening Examplify (from the dock or by directly opening the application) it bounces for a few moments and does not respond any further, the application was most likely moved from the ‘applications’ folder. To resolve this, click and drag the application back into the ‘application’ folder.

    To create an alias (shortcut), right-click the app and select ‘create alias’. Next, drag the alias to the desktop or move to the dock. If Examplify is located in your ‘applications’ folder but the issue persists, you may need to perform the following permissions fix:

    1. Navigate to the ‘/Library/Application Support’ folder
    2. Right-click the Examplify folder and select Get info. A new window will appear where you will need to change the permissions to the folder
    3. Look for the sharing and permissions settings at the bottom of the window, then click the lock on the bottom right to make changes
    4. Select the plus sign (+) and then add your user or account; also make sure it has ‘Read & Write’ privileges
    5. Select the gear icon and choose the option to Apply to all enclosed items
  • My computer has frozen/crashed/is otherwise unresponsive, what do I do?

    If your computer has become unresponsive or shuts down, DO NOT exit the exam. Follow these instructions:

    1. If your computer is still on, try turning it off by doing the following: a. Windows – press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select Shut down b. Mac – press CTRL+CMD+EJECT
    2. Turn the computer on. You will need to wait 10 seconds prior to doing so if you had to turn off your computer manually (as per step 1).
    3. Open Examplify.
    4. If you are prompted to enter a resume code, contact the invigilator.
  • How do I perform a clean install of Examplify?

    Windows 10

    1. Go to the Windows Start menu (select Windows icon on bottom right or press the Windows button on your keyboard)
    2. Select gear icon to open Settings
    3. Select Apps or Apps & features (differs depending on your version of Windows 10)
    4. Locate Examplify and select Uninstall
    5. Open File Explorer and type into the address bar without quotations: C:\Program Files (x86)
    6. Locate the Examsoft folder and rename it to ‘examsoft.old’ without quotations
    7. Within the address bar, type: ‘C:\ProgramData’ without quotations
    8. Locate the Examplify folder and rename to ‘examplify.old’ without quotations
    9. Within the address bar, type ‘C:\Users\Public\Documents’ without quotations
    10. Delete both of the ‘.adata’ (without quotations) folders listed
    11. You can now run the Examplify installer to reinstall Examplify

    MacOS

    1. In Finder, select the Go menu
    2. Select Applications
    3. Find the ‘Examplify app’
    4. Drag the Examplify icon into the trash on your dock or right-click and select Move to Trash
    5. Choose Empty Trash from the ‘Finder’ menu
    6. Select the magnifying glass icon on the top right of your screen
    7. Type ‘terminal’ without quotations, and press Enter
    8. Enter the following command into the terminal window and press Enter: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
    9. Hold down the Option key and right-click the ‘Finder’ icon on the dock. Select Relaunch
    10. Select the Go menu and choose Computer
    11. Navigate to and delete the following hidden folders:
      • \MacintoshHD\.adata-Examplify
      • \MacintoshHD\Users\Shared\.adata
      • \MacintoshHD\Users\Shared\.adata-Examplify
    12. Navigate to ‘Library’ > ‘Application Support’
    13. Rename the ‘Examplify’ folder and rename it to ‘examplify.OLD’ without quotations.
    14. Restart your computer.
    15. You can now run the Examplify installer to reinstall Examplify.

Examplify - Post-exam issues

  • My internet connection is not working after completing my exam, what do I do?

    If you’re unable to access the internet after taking an exam, restart your device. If you’re using Wi-FI, try moving closer to your router or connect your computer to your router using an Ethernet cable.

    If you’re still unable to access the internet, you’ll need to connect to another network (if you have a Wi-Fi-enabled computer, you may wish to connect via your mobile phone).

    After re-establishing an internet connection, open Examplify and you will be prompted to retry uploading your exam answer file.

  • I have finished my online exam but Examplify settings still remain (e.g. Examsoft wallpaper), how Do I remove this?

    When undertaking a secure exam which ensures validity of your submission, Examplify will make a number of changes to your computer, such as blocking internet access and some visual changes to your operating system. After you have uploaded your exam paper, occasionally Examplify does not revert back any changes made.

    Follow the instructions below to manually revert these changes:

    1. Open the Terminal on a Mac device by using the search function to locate Terminal

    2. Copy the commands listed below (we always recommend copying and pasting all commands at once):

    defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool YES

    killall Finder

    defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

    defaults delete com.apple.dock mcx-expose-disabled

    killall Dock

    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png

    cd /Library/Caches

    rm /Library/Caches/com.apple.desktop.admin.pn

    3. Restart the device to see resolution

  • I receive a blank screen once logged into LMS

  • Do I need an internet connection to complete a test in LMS?
