Thesis: Nutritional strategies to regulate inflammation and iron metabolism
This series of investigations will aim to examine the influence of pre-exercise muscle glycogen status and post-exercise nutritional strategies on the subsequent kinetics of the inflammatory and hormonal responses relevant to the regulation of iron in endurance athletes.
Why my research is important
The outcomes of this research may be implemented into the daily training environment of athletes who struggle to maintain healthy iron stores. Should the outcomes of these investigations show an influence of the pre-exercise muscle glycogen stores, or the post-exercise carbohydrate consumption strategies on the post-exercise inflammatory and hormonal responses relevant to iron metabolism, then tailored nutritional interventions may be implemented to ensure that an athletes pre-training and post-training food practices are optimal, which may assist in the absorption of dietary iron from meals that are subsequently consumed
