Harnessing resources and energy for a sustainable future
Finding clever solutions to global energy demands
Expanding global populations have placed increased demand on the earth and environment to provide the resources needed to sustain life. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says the world’s energy needs could be 50 per cent higher in 2030 than today. The cost of energy and mineral resources will rise as they become harder to access and more costly to extract.
The world needs smarter, more efficient and cost-effective ways of extracting and using coal, oil and gas. Further research and investment in alternative energy solutions, as well as embracing renewable sources of energy are essential as part of a more diverse and sustainable energy mix.
What UWA is doing about this global issue
We're approaching the challenge of rising demands and increasing costs with a range of energy solutions and collaborative research. Our teams are working with industry partners to find smarter ways to discover, develop and use minerals and energy resources and technology.
- At the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET), researchers are bridging the gap between current research and the immediate real-world needs of the rapidly changing mining industry. Their researchers undertake applied research to develop innovative, integrated tools and techniques to improve the risk-reward ratio in exploration.
- Dedicated researchers, educators and industry partners work together at the Centre for Energy Geoscience to find better, more efficient ways to discover, develop and use hydrocarbon energy resources.
Their investigations span the geosciences spectrum, with applications for conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons, and the sequestration of greenhouse gases such as CO2 in an environmentally responsible manner.
- The Energy and Minerals Institute is charged with developing new knowledge and advanced technologies for efficient, effective and environmentally friendly use of fuels and energy in the resources industry.
- UWA’s Centre for Energy is dedicated to world-class energy research and technology development. Their research teams work closely with companies, institutions and government agencies to improve gas-to-liquid, clean coal and biofuel technologies, while developing better ways to minimise greenhouse gas and other emissions.
