Thesis: Tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Roebuck Basin, offshore Western Australia

The project is focused on characterizing the regional structural framework of the Roebuck Basin with a focus on Palaeozoic and Mesozoic tectonic events and their control on the stratigraphic architecture by using state-of-the-art three-dimensional seismic imaging at basin scale.

Specifically, the project will be conducted by applying the following methods:

a. Semi–automated full volume 3D and conventional 2D seismic interpretation will allow building a high resolution (< 25 m) and basin scale tectono-stratigraphic framework.

b. Calibration of 2D/3D seismic data with available well data (biostratigraphy, petrophysics and lithology) will allow defining the key regional stratal surfaces

c. High resolution seismic attribute mapping & analysis and well data integration will allow reconstructing the paleo-depositional environments and paleogeography, as well as studying the mechanical behavior of interval lithologies and fault-seal analysis.

This high resolution, three-dimensional structural and stratigraphic mapping at basin-scale will have significant impact for understanding the complex tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the Roebuck Basin during the past ~ 350 million years. The results will also help evaluating the petroleum prospectivity and targeting new deeper prospects in the largely under-explored Roebuck Basin, only recently established as a promising oil and gas province.

Why my research is important

This PhD project will improve the understanding of tectonic events and geological evolution of the Roebuck Basin during the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic and will correlate its geological history to the more studied Carnarvon and Browse/Bonaparte basins as well as the onshore geological record of this period. Understanding the timing and mechanisms of the Bedout & Fitzroy movements and their associated structural inversions will help for the identification of Palaeozoic-early Mesozoic play intervals, trap mechanisms and geometries, and seal couplets. Seismic and well data integration with multiple sequence stratigraphic concepts and range of geological scenarios using DIONISOS© will help in understating the petroleum system and potential of Roebuck Basin. This has a direct impact for future petroleum exploration activities in the study area.
