Thesis: Degradation of recalcitrant products from weathered petroleum contaminations in Western Australia and Kuwait

It is known that some petroleum products such as crude oil contain a fraction of so called polar compounds which are more resistant to degradation than hydrocarbons. The biodegradation of polar compounds formed from weathered diesel has been poorly studied and the mechanisms are not fully understood. The aim of this project is to further elucidate the biodegradation of polar compounds under different conditions and to identify the microorganisms and specific biodegradation genes responsible at contaminated sites in Western Australia and Kuwait.

Why my research is important

This project will investigate the biodegradation rates in Kuwait’s contaminated soil, and will contribute important information towards remediating old petroleum sites with a high content of recalcitrant products.
