Thesis: Impact of Gold mining in Quang Nam province in Vietnam on sustainable development of the region

The proposed research aims to make a substantial and original contribution to understanding the impact of Gold mining in the Quang Nam province in Vietnam on sustainable development of the region.

This will achieved by providing the first detailed empirical analysis of mining impacts on the region. Following on from this, it will propose strategies that promote sustainable regional development in the context of mining in Viet Nam.

The research will offer better insights into the link between the notion of sustainable livelihoods and mining, and in particular the link between mining and indicators of development. In addition, it will provide a new insights into the so-called ‘resource curse’, and the extent to which this perspective is relevant to resource-dependent regions in Viet Nam.

Why my research is important

The proposed research will make a substantial and original contribution to theoretical and empirical knowledge on mining to sustainable regional development by:

- Evaluating the contribution of mining to local economic and social development in Quang Nam province, Viet Nam.

- Critically assessing the perceived role and value of different forms of indicators of regional development in the context of mining.

- Assessing the role of government responses and institutional frameworks for the management of the relationship between mining and development.

- Contributing to theoretical and methodological debates in geography and regional development theory by analysing the linkages between mining and development theories in the context of literature on Sustainable Livelihoods, the resource curse and uneven development.
