Associate Professor Tom Briffa

International pioneer in the prevention of cardiovascular disease
Associate Professor Tom Briffa is a health services researcher, focusing on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and its application in medical practice. As Director of the Centre for Health Services Research and Head of UWA’s Cardiovascular Research Group, Associate Professor Briffa’s studies cover clinical practice, randomised trials and primary research publications.
Working alongside a global network of health professionals, Associate Professor Briffa was a founding member of state, national and international associations for the prevention of cardiac disease. He continues to hold numerous honorary positions with peak health agencies. His research within health services focuses on the linkage of health data.
He is currently working on:
- monitoring coronary artery disease
- managing Indigenous coronary heart disease
- studying coronary artery revascularisation
- looking at the epidemiology of atherothrombotic disease
- various cardiovascular risk factor cohort studies
Associate Professor Briffa also teaches general and clinical epidemiology for undergraduate and postgraduate public health programs in the School of Population and Global Health, and is Director of the Centre for Health Services Research.
