As an associate professor within UWA’s Oceans Graduate School and Department of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, Dr Scott Draper works on challenges related to estimating wave and current loads on offshore structures. Dr Draper researches problems such as the stability of subsea infrastructure on the seabed; the best arrangement of marine renewable energy devices; and wave kinematics and hydrodynamics of floating objects.
As an expert in offshore engineering, Dr Draper has developed models to determine the optimum arrangement of offshore wind turbines for power generation, and to estimate how much energy could be removed from the tide at locations around the United Kingdom.
Dr Draper’s research is supported by the Australian Research Council, and he works closely with industry partners such as Woodside, Shell, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds Register Group and Carnegie Clean Energy. His work has been displayed in more than 100 publications, and he often supervises award-winning final-year and PhD students in topics relating to ocean engineering. He also works on industry initiatives involving students, such as the Woodside RiverLab.
