Dr Ian Li

Senior lecturer in health and labour economics

At its core, economics is about decision making around resource allocation and maximising
well-being. Dr Ian Li

Dr Ian Li is an economist working across the areas of health and labour economics. He is particularly interested in research with strong policy elements and seeks to work with policy makers and consumers for demonstrable outcomes. His recent work has included: 

  • Analyses of the nursing and public health workforce
  • Determinants and consequences of ill mental health and well-being
  • Higher education policy and equity, with a particular emphasis on graduate outcomes and student experience 
  • Economic evaluation of health programs, in the areas of cardiovascular disease, hearing loss and diabetes

Dr Li’s research program has been funded by numerous prestigious competitive schemes at the national level. His research has been published in top journals in the health and economics fields, and have established policy impacts at various levels of government. 

Dr Li serves the research community as a reviewer for multiple journals, assessor or panel member for nationally competitive grant funding bodies, and editorial responsibilities for peer-reviewed journals. Dr Li is an active collaborator with industry and government on commissioned research and consulting opportunities. 

Dr Li is also a passionate educator. He is the coordinator and principal lecturer for the health policy and economics units in the School of Population and Global Health, and directs the Public Health undergraduate program. He is a member of the Board of Studies (Management and Commerce) and the University’s Equity and Participation Working Group, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Dr Li seeks to provide his students with knowledge and skills in health policy and economics, while providing an excellent student experience. His excellence in teaching has been recognised by several teaching awards at UWA and a national teaching award from the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australasia.
