D’Arcy Holman is an Emeritus Professor in the UWA School of Population and Global Health. He became UWA’s Foundation Professor of Public Health in 1994 and since then has been published extensively in the fields of epidemiology, disease control and health services evaluation. Professor Holman led the creation of the iconic WA Data Linkage System and Australia’s first complete integration between Commonwealth and State health data to provide the full picture of health system performance. 

His many other firsts include the nation’s first official counts of diseases caused by tobacco and substance abuse; the first comprehensive overview of health status and program-based health plan for an entire Australian state; the first evaluation of a health promotion foundation; Australia’s first national course on public health leadership; and the first international training program on the analysis of linked health data. He also established the first health consumer advocate appointed to a research organisation in Australia.

Professor Holman received the 2006 Sydney Sax Public Health Medal, Australia’s highest professional award for lifetime achievement in delivering public health benefit to the nation. He received a Centenary Medal of Australia in 2003 for voluntary services to the health system and as president of the Cancer Council of Western Australia. In 1998 he was also awarded the Inaugural Ministerial Award for Innovation and Best Practice in Health Promotion as recognition of the societal value of his research.
Professor Holman retired in 2014.
