There is sparse guidance relating to managing medications to treat other chronic conditions for people living with dementia. My goal is to change this.
Professor Christopher Etherton-Beer
Professor Etherton-Beer is a geriatrician and a clinical pharmacologist at Royal Perth Hospital and chairs the Western Australian Therapeutics Advisory Group. He serves on Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). He also chairs the Drug Utilisation Sub-committee of PBAC, which has a national focus of excellence in collecting, analysing and interpreting data on the utilisation of medicines in Australia for use by the PBAC.
Professor Etherton-Beer is currently involved in running several research studies that are looking at improving medication outcomes in older people. At UWA, he co-ordinates the University’s geriatric medicine teaching within the Medical School. He remains an active clinician, and at Royal Perth Bentley Group is the Medical Co-Director of the Medical Division.
His research has led him to develop several education and organisational resource tools. He has designed a comprehensive online health education program, known as e-ageing. This program was initially designed to assist medical students learn about common age related conditions. However, this program is now being accessed by health professionals and students from around Australia and the world.
Across the globe people are living longer. With older people expected to make up nearly a quarter of Australia’s population by 2056, these resources are needed now more than even to assist health professionals to optimise health services for older people.
