Adjunct Professor Jane Heyworth

Environmental epidemiologist
Professor Jane Heyworth is an environmental epidemiologist with more than 30 years of experience in environmental health research, policy and practice. Her specific research interests centre on the impacts of the environment, in particular air, noise and water quality, on health. Professor Heyworth collaborates with researchers across Australia and in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, Canada, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Some of her studies have included looking at health effects of long-term exposure to air pollution; effects of heat and noise in the workplace; particulate and metal exposure in children; maternal exposure to persistent toxic substances; environmental and occupational risk factors for breast cancer and colorectal cancer; and the health effects of rainwater consumption.
Professor Heyworth has won nine excellence in teaching awards in the categories of individual teaching, honours supervision and student support.
She received a citation for her Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning at the 2014 Australian Awards for University Teaching, and was honoured for encouraging, inspiring and enabling students to become well-rounded practitioners through application-based learning and supporting students in their journey from enrolment to graduation.
Today, Professor Heyworth teaches epidemiology within undergraduate and postgraduate public health programs in the School of Population and Global Health, as well as running the public health field trips to Southern India and Nepal.
