Dr Cecilia Sun

Dr Cecilia Sun is a musicologist, pianist and lecturer at the UWA Conservatorium of Music. She is interested in the relationship between scholarship and performance in both classical-era repertoire and post-1960s experimental music. She is also the Joint Artistic Director of UWA’s research project, Irwin Street Collective. This project focuses on historical music and attempts to revitalise historically informed performance throughout the Perth community.

Dr Sun began her studies at UWA before completing postgraduate work in the United States at the Eastman School of Music and University of California, Los Angeles. During her time away from Perth, Dr Sun taught at the University of Sydney and University of California, Irvine. After returning to UWA to teach in 2016, Dr Sun established the undergraduate unit Women in Music.

As the unit’s coordinator and senior lecturer, Dr Sun teaches her students to identify important women in music history and articulate their significance to several musical genres. From representations of women in nineteenth-century opera and African American Blues Queens of the 1920s, to female performers in Chinese courts, Dr Sun attempts to understand the experiences of women in music history.

Among her many accomplishments are being joint author of a published entry on ‘Minimalism’ in the Oxford Bibliographies in 2016, and presenting a research paper at the Society for American Music in 2015.
