Michael Blakeney is a UWA Winthrop Professor and leading expert, globally sought after by senior organisations in intellectual property and agriculture. Professor Blakeney has worked for the United Nations in Geneva and is advisor to various UN and international organisations on these topics.

He also advises several university and public research institutes on technology transfer and the management of intellectual property.

Professor Blakeney is an active researcher on intellectual property law, teaching at universities throughout the world, including Australia, China, Italy, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

He is passionate about minimising food waste and is currently working on a project concerning the role of local knowledge in adapting to climate change in Australia, India and Indonesia. Professor Blakeney feels this stands at the heart of food security for the coming century.

He is currently working on an ARC Discovery Project called food security and the governance of local knowledge in India and Indonesia. This is examining the ways small farmers have modified their agricultural practices to deal with climate change.

As a teacher, he is involved in the following units Intellectual Property Law and Law Review.

Professor Blakeney has been supervising PhD students for more than 20 years. Topics supervised have included:

  • patenting and biotechnology
  • protection of traditional knowledge
  • conservation of genetic resources
  • protection of traditional cultural expressions
  • theorising and conceptualising legal pluralism
  • description of legal puralism in Indonesia
