Dr Jay Ebert

Dr Jay Ebert is a lecturer and researcher within the School of Human Sciences (Exercise and Sport Science) at The University of Western Australia. Since completing his PhD in cartilage repair, biomechanics and exercise rehabilitation at UWA in 2008, for which he was awarded the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Medal, he has developed a passion for musculoskeletal and orthopaedic research.

Clinically, he is a Director and practicing Accredited Exercise Physiologist at HFRC, a leading exercise rehabilitation clinic with a focus in orthopaedic rehabilitation, for which he was awarded the ESSA ‘Exercise Physiologist of the Year’ in 2010.

Further to his teaching and clinical roles, he is the Director of Research at the Perth Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Research Institute and is a Director of the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of Western Australia. Given his clinical and research contributions, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 2018 and a full Fellow of ESSA in 2019.

Through this work, he has published and presented extensively in high-quality international peer reviewed journals, undertaken in collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons, cell biologists, physical therapists and experimental biomechanists.

Through these various teaching, research and mentoring roles, he continues to be at the forefront in the project development and coordination of several large orthopaedic research programs. His research areas remained focused around improving evidence-based treatment for patients with musculoskeletal injury and/or undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

My clinical work and research project focus is in exercise, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and orthopaedic care, with research interests in everything from improving surgical processes to the wider scope of peri-operative patient management. Given my passion for musculoskeletal care and the continually evolving scope of best-practice patient management in this field, it has always been exciting to be at the forefront of developing new standards of evidence-based treatment via quality research.”

Current projects

There are always new projects just around the corner. Current projects include trials that seek to improve our knowledge around best-practice non-surgical, surgical and post-operative management pathways in patients undergoing a range of orthopedic conditions, such as anterior cruciate ligament and multi-ligament reconstruction in the knee, meniscal repair and surgery for patellofemoral instability in the knee, femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and labral pathology in the hip, and instability and rotator cuff pathology in the shoulder.


Research

Dr Ebert's research has entered a number of varied areas, the primary research focus and, therefore, published works, have been within the musculoskeletal and orthopaedic setting.

Teaching

Dr Ebert describes his teaching style as practical and clinically orientated. He currently teaches SSEH5651 Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation.

What he enjoys most about interacting with students is they are continually presenting with new perspectives based on the evolving environment they are raised in. Interaction and discussion around these evolving areas provides new avenues for upskilling and research.
