Professor Tanya Fitzgerald

Historian and leader in education
Professor Tanya Fitzgerald is a historian of education, public educator and Dean and Head of the Graduate School of Education at UWA.
“When I was younger, I dreamed of being either an actor or a forensic scientist. And then I discovered my real love – history. Being an academic and a historian now means I can combine all of these ambitions,” she says.
Tanya is currently working on a history of scholarly women, academic diplomacy and the International Federation of University Women.
“Hidden in the archive files are rich stories of resilient and innovative women, who pushed at the boundaries of social convention to advocate on behalf of their female colleagues,” she explains.
Tanya has lived and worked in New Zealand, England and Victoria, and is committed to making a contribution to our society through her work at UWA.

Supervisor opportunities
Tanya has been supervising PhD students for 20 years, covering topics such as international students and cultural adaptation; women leaders in higher education in Vietnam; migration, mobilisation and higher education; higher education policy reform in Cambodia; and academic work and the contemporary university.
