PROFILE

Associate Professor Leticia Algarves Miranda

Started at UWA: 2018

Collegiality means a lot to me. I believe I can achieve a lot by myself but much more whenever teamwork is involved. Multidisciplinary is essential for my research in periodontal medicine; to work with specialists from the medical field is vital.

Associate Professor Leticia Miranda Algarves

Associate Professor Leticia Algarves Miranda has more than 15 years’ experience in clinical periodontology as a private specialist. She has also taught periodontology and foundational sciences (immunology, histology, embryology) to dental, medical and other health-related professions students at Pontifical Catholic University, Santa Cruz University and Sao Leopoldo Mandic University. She is now the Discipline Lead of Periodontics at UWA and teaches in the Doctor of Dental Medicine and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry courses at UWA.

She then completed her PhD in Periodontology at Rio de Janeiro State University, Brazil, in 2003 and a PhD in Medicine at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, in 2007.

Her research interests include unravelling the mechanisms involved in the susceptibility to, and in the tissue destruction mechanisms of, periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and in healing enhancement of periodontal therapy. She also wishes to establish connections of oral health with general health and with other tissue-destructive chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome and osteoporosis, among others.
