Western Australians deserve equal and equitable access to highly trained optometrists.

DR WILFRED TANG

Dr Wilfred Tang is the inaugural program director of the Doctor of Optometry course at UWA. He is an accomplished, successful, self-motivated educator and therapeutically endorsed optometrist. He has extensive clinical experiences from working alongside ophthalmology colleagues at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, as well as with clinical practice at busy independent and leading corporate optometry practices in Perth. These experiences have provided Dr Tang with the capabilities to contribute towards contemporary curriculum development, facilitation of knowledge transfer, industry networking and mentoring potential optometrists at WA’s world-leading academic institution.

Dr Tang has prior experience in optometry curricular and academic leadership from 13 years of significant contributions in Singapore. As the head of the optometry programs and optometry training centre at the Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre, Dr Tang successfully integrated people and workplaces for a highly effective and productive

team within the Polytechnic Optometry Centre. Having served as a senior lecturer in optometry provides him with an ideal platform from which to mentor new and promising graduates. Dr Tang is also a published author in scientific journals, and his current research interests include innovative learning modalities, eye diseases and ocular imaging.

At Singapore Polytechnic, Dr Tang was recognised in his roles as lecturer, clinician, researcher, scientific author, senior academic administrator, industry partner, business developer and primary eyecare advocate. For these accomplishments, he was the first recipient of the Visionary Award in 2004 and the Outstanding Young Person of the Year award in 2006. He was also appointed to Singapore’s first Optometrist and Opticians Board in 2008.
