Late Paleozoic-Mesozoic geological evolution of northern Thailand

Unravelling the tectonic processes that created continental Thailand

The geological history of Southeast Asia is very complex and is characterised by the amalgamation of many discrete geological units and microcontinents during the past ~370 million years.

Our multidisciplinary project includes state-of-the-art geochemical fingerprinting and geochronological techniques to unravel this history.

This project focuses on the tectonic history of continental and arc terranes, including the closure of ocean basins across the Sukhothai (volcanic arc) Terrane, Nan Suture Zone and western Indochina Terrane.

This work follows and expands on our work on the sedimentary rocks of the Loei-Phetachabun Foldbelt and mid-Triassic intrusive magmatism associated with subduction of Paleotethys seafloor beneath western Indochina.

The results of this study will provide a geologically ‘young’ example of continental crustal evolution to compare with Archean and Proterozoic examples in Australia and other ancient cratonic regions elsewhere. The results will also provide the basis for understanding the formation and distribution of a diverse suite of mineral deposits in a mineral system framework.

In addition, understanding the depositional history of associated sedimentary basins and their deformation has important implications for the development of petroleum resources in the region.

The PhD student has the opportunity to work in this multidisciplinary team, on a project based on field data collection (mapping and sampling) of igneous rock suites and associated sedimentary rocks across the study area, and integrating new and existing geochemical, petrological and geochronological data to construct new tectonic models.

Research team leader: Professor Annette George

I am a geoscientist with broad interests in evolution of diverse sedimentary basins including their paleotectonic setting and paleoclimatic conditions, biota and implications of their development for resources. My research is focused on understanding Earth’s environmental changes through deep time through integrating multiple geoscientific datasets.

This project is co-led with Associate Professor Marco Fiorentini, whose research expertise is in igneous geochemistry and petrology, and Dr Luis Parra Avila, with expertise in igneous geochemistry and geochronology.
