Powerhouse percussionist, leading researcher and passionate educator

Students bring their own perspective to music making, and I learn from them every week. I love the enthusiasm that comes with their new discoveries and ideas.Dr Louise Devenish

Dr Louise Devenish is a Churchill Fellow and multi-award-winning performer, whose practice incorporates percussion performance, research and education. A dedicated advocate of new and Australian music, Dr Devenish has commissioned more than 50 works for percussion and premiered countless others. Dr Devenish brought her passion for percussion to the UWA Conservatorium of Music in 2013; the same year in which she established the Piñata Percussion ensemble, which now has a regular touring schedule and delivers more than 20 performances each year.

Dr Devenish is a core artist with performance groups Speak Percussion, Decibel New Music, The Sound Collectors and Intercurrent. She regularly performs throughout Australasia, Europe, North America and the United Kingdom.

Projects from Dr Devenish explore the history and future of contemporary percussion practice through performance and research. Two of her current projects explore Australian contemporary percussion history and new Australian music, with one including a national tour and album. She has received funding for her work from the Australia Council and Department of Culture and the Arts.
