Clare Moran and August Mikucki Receiving Student Travel Awards from the West Australian Branch of the Australian Society for Microbiology (WA-ASM)

The ASM Nancy Millis Student Award is presented annually to one student member of the ASM from each state, to enable them to attend and deliver an oral presentation at the annual scientific meeting of the ASM.

The WA-ASM also provides a Branch Travel Award, to finance a WA student to attend the national conference. This year, both the WA-ASM Branch Travel awardee and the Nancy Millis Student Award winners will present at the ASM national conference in Sydney, NSW between the 11th to the 14th of July 2022. The WA-ASM Nancy Millis Student Award was awarded to Clare Moran.
Clare Moran will be giving a presentation about the enzyme chitobiase and the significance it plays for Burkholderia pseudomallei
Clare, who began her PhD journey in 2018 and is now in her final year, will be giving a presentation about the enzyme chitobiase and the significance that the enzyme plays in the metabolism, physiology and environmental survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis.
August Mickuki will be giving a speech about their study of Nesseria meningitdis
August Mikucki, who won the WA-ASM Branch Travel Award, will also be giving a speech about their study of Nesseria meningitdis carriage in remote communities of the Pilbara during the outbreak of Invasive Meningococcal Disease in Western Australia in 2019. Since Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at increased risk for Meningococcal Disease, understanding carriage in these communities is important for deciding which vaccination strategies could be most helpful in disease prevention. The ASM Nancy Millis student award is awarded to the best student presenting research carried out as part of their PhD or Masters by Research and consists of conference registration, return airfare and an accommodation allowance.
