The Department of Physics studies how we exist in the world, looking at quantum physics; atomic, molecular, nuclear and particle physics; condensed matter physics; photonics; and astrophysics.

Drawing on a strong mathematical background, our students gain a thorough understanding on what makes things work, examining advanced technologies including nuclear power, radar, lasers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanners.

Physics major

Physics examines the world around us at the most fundamental level, from the origin and fate of the universe to the behaviour of matter on subatomic length scales – and everything in between. During your Physics major, you’ll learn complex physics concepts, while working from a basis of mathematics to problem solve real-world issues.

Specialisations in the Master of Physics

  • Astronomy and Astrophysics
    Observational and theoretical methods of studying astronomical systems using world-class observatories and supercomputers to advance knowledge.
  • Computational Physics
    Numerical methods, high-performance computing, graphics processing unit (GPU) programming and methods of computational physics.
  • Experimental Physics
    Precision measurement experimental skills ranging from Atomic, Molecular and Surface physics, Frequency and Quantum Metrology, Optomechanics and Gravitational Wave detection instrumentation .
  • Medical Physics
    Gives applicants from physics and engineering backgrounds the knowledge and problem-solving skills suitable for entry into the ACPSEM Training Program (TEAP) in radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology or nuclear medicine.
  • Theoretical Physics
    Theoretical aspects of Quantum Gravity and physics beyond the Standard Model.
