Our research

Fostering multidisciplinary innovation and research to solve global challenges

From inventing a needle microscope that pinpoints cancer cells, to creating safer designs for oil and gas pipelines or detecting gravitational waves, our research discovers ways to improve the future of our world.

Our research strengths and priorities in engineering and mathematical sciences are focussed on three main themes: Engineering for Remote Operations, the Science of Discovery, and Technologies for Better Health. All three themes intersect with each other as well as with the overall University strengths and priorities, and align with Western Australia's natural comparative advantages, including a wealth of resources in minerals and energy and high degree of geographical isolation.

Our Faculty research model ensures critical mass of researchers around focused research areas. The key characteristic has been the alignment of academics, research staff and higher degree by research (HDR) students into significant, usually multidisciplinary, teams known as research clusters, within and across each of the research themes. These clusters are designed to enable our Faculty and University to become a world leader in these three themes, by developing people who bring creative solutions to technological problems or to the discovery of new knowledge.
