Principal Fellow


As a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA)  you will present a sustained record of effective strategic leadership in academic practice and academic development as a key contribution to high quality student learning. To be recognised as a Principal Fellow, candidates must evidence that they are:

  • Highly experienced educators, with a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice. This may be within their institution (at whole-of-institutional level) or wider (inter)national settings.
  • Highly experienced and/or senior staff with wide-ranging academic or academic-related strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with key aspects of teaching and supporting learning;
  • Responsible for institutional strategic leadership and policy-making in the area of teaching and learning;
  • Able to evidence their strategic impact and influence in relation to teaching and learning that extends beyond their own institution.
The AFS is not accredited to assess Descriptor 4, Principal Fellow (PFHEA); however, if you are committed to applying for this descriptor category you may meet and talk about it with our co-chair, as financial support for direct application to the HEA will be available to eligible staff.
