The Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) is the most prestigious and well-recognised examination system in Australia. With a tradition of excellence stretching back over a century, it provides graded assessments for music, speech and drama students in both practical and theoretical examinations.  

The overall direction of AMEB activities is the responsibility of a Federal Board consisting of representatives of educational institutions that are signatories to the AMEB constitution.

AMEB (WA) is affiliated to The University of Western Australia through its Conservatorium of Music and receives financial support from the Western Australian Government through the Department of Education.

Timetable

AMEB (WA) examines from the beginning of April through to the end of November each year in the Perth metropolitan area. Whereas Pianoforte and Piano for Leisure are examined every week, instruments, speech, voice, diploma and Rockschool examinations are assigned to specific weeks within the timetable.

Examinations are normally offered in Albany, Esperance, Bunbury, Port Hedland, Kalgoorlie and Geraldton, subject to sufficient enrolments, during specific weeks as indicated.

Enrolment

For both theory and practical examinations, enrol online at AMEB Score – WA.

If you would prefer to complete a paper enrolment form, please contact the WA State Office first. You will need to download the examination timetable and subject code booklet.

Policies

When you enrol a candidate for examination, either online or in hard copy, you will be asked to sign a declaration.  The enroller needs to ensure that they understand both federal and state policies relating to the conduct of examinations, especially cancellations, withdrawals and transfers.

2019 AMEB Award Ceremonies

Arrangements for the 2019 AMEB Awards Ceremonies are yet to be finalised.  They are expected to be held in the Callaway Music Auditorium, UWA Conservatorium of Music at The University of Western Australia on Sunday 8 March 2020.

There will be three separate ceremonies, as outlined below.  The grades that will attend each ceremony will be advised in the new year.

Ceremony 1  Juniors 2:00pm   Grades 2 & 3  
Ceremony 2  Intermediate 3:15pm Grades 4, 5 & 6
Ceremony 3  Seniors 4:30pm Grades 7, 8, Certificates & Diplomas

Criteria for Eligibility to Attend

Whilst Preliminary, Introductory and Grade 1 Theory and Practical candidates as well as Grade 2 Theory candidates are ineligible to attend the Award Ceremony, they will receive in the mail a Certificate of Excellence together with a copy of the Awards Program with their names listed.  These will be mailed out after the Awards Ceremonies.

Music and Speech THEORY Examinations must have been successfully completed in 2019.

  • Grades 3 Grade A+ (Mark awarded must be 100%)
  • Grades 4 & 5 Grade A+ (Mark awarded must be 95% – 100%)
  • Grade 6 and above Grade A+ (Mark awarded must be 95% – 100%)

Music and Speech PRACTICAL

For Grades 2-5, examinations must have been successfully completed in 2019.

For Grades 6 and above where there are theory co-requisites, the practical component may have been completed earlier.  To be eligible for attendance at the 2020 ceremony, both the practical and theory grades must have been recorded by 31st December 2019.

  • Grades 2 & 3 Grade A+
  • Grades 4 & 5 Grade A+
  • Grades 6 - Certificate of Performance Grade A+

Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship Diplomas - Candidates must have successfully completed both practical and theory components by 31 December 2019.

Australian Music Examinations Board WA

The WA State Office is located on the Claremont campus of The University of Western Australia, on the corner of Princess and Goldsworthy Roads in Claremont. The office is at the eastern end of the stone heritage-listed building. Visitors are asked to park in Car Park 2 (paid parking) accessible from Goldsworthy Road and to please observe and comply with all signage.
