Brian Maloney

Brian Maloney is an internationally celebrated percussionist, holding the position of Principal Percussionist with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra since 2016. When not teaching at UWA you can find him playing with WASO, whether it be at the Perth Concert Hall for a symphony orchestra concert, His Majesty’s Theatre for an opera or a ballet, or regionally throughout Western Australia when the orchestra is on tour.

After growing up in rural upstate New York, Brian studied at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of retired Boston Symphony Orchestra percussionist Frank Epstein, followed by a Master of Music degree from Boston University under Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Timpanist Timothy Genis. Hailed as a “virtuosic” performer by the Boston Musical Intelligencer, Brian was an active member of Boston's classical music scene for a number of years, where he played with the Boston Philharmonic and the Boston Pops Orchestra. 

He has also performed with orchestras around the world including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony and the New World Symphony. Brian was awarded fellowships at a multitude of prestigious music festivals across America including the Aspen Music Festival, the Castleton Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, and the renowned Tanglewood Music Centre.

Brian has held numerous tutorials for the West Australian Youth Orchestra and has been an examiner for both the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking in music. He is passionate about being able to change peoples’ lives through the power of music!
