Biography

Tim Shanahan was appointed as the inaugural Director Energy and Minerals Initiative at The University of Western Australia in November 2007

This is an important strategic role which will reinforce the University’s strong commitment to supporting the minerals and energy industry as it experiences a period of significant growth.

From June 2001 Tim was Chief Executive of the Western Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME). CME is the peak advocacy group for the resources sector in WA representing companies that contribute over 90 percent of the state’s mining production and exploration expenditure.

From 1989 to 2000, Tim was the Executive Director of the Western Australian Municipal Association, the representative organisation of local government in Western Australia.

In 2004 Tim was appointed as an independent Director of the WA Local Government Superannuation Plan and is Chairman of the Compliance Audit and Risk Management Committee for the group.

He is a Trustee of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), and a member of the CEDA WA Advisory Committee.

Tim is member of the Australia Day Council, Western Australia Management Committee and past Chairman of the Council.

He was elected to the Council of the RAC WA in 2001 and is currently the Senior Vice President.

In his role at Director, Energy an Minerals Initiative, he has been appointed to the Boards of the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC) and the WA Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA). He has recently joined the Board of the Australian Centre for Natural Gas Management.

Tim is currently involved in providing input on Resources Project Approvals to the Industry Working Group convened by the Minister for Minerals and Petroleum and on Local Government Reforms in Western Australia as part of group advising the Minister for Local Government.

In March and April 2009 respectively, Tim was appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Esperance Port Authority and Chairman of the Pilbara Development Commission.

In January 2001, he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding service to local government and in April 2003, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to local government in Western Australia.

He was the recipient of the 2007 WA Gas Industry Development Award.

He is a Law graduate from the University of Western Australia.
