Professor Neville Bruce
Senior Honorary Research Fellow
Biography
My primary degree was in Veterinary Science which I completed at the University of Sydney.
This was followed by one year of rural veterinary experience. I was appointed to a full time position as Associate Lecturer in Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Melbourne and while there completed a PhD focused on fetal growth and development. This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research, Oxford University where I researched on major problems of human reproduction. I returned to Australia in 1973 to take up a position in human reproduction in the now School of Anatomy & Human Biology at The University of Western Australia. I have remained in this School ever since; it has provided an invigorating academic and collegial environment and a foundation for my thinking and development of Integrated Human Studies (IHS).
I have been at times heavily involved in administration including two terms as Head of Department. I had an active role in instigating and developing the Australasian Society for Human Biology and have served as secretary, treasurer, news editor and president of this society which closely relates to IHS. At an extra curricular level, I have been active in Scientists Against Nuclear Arms, the Peace Education Society and the WA Alternative Fuels Association.
Key research
- My major research interests have centred on human reproduction, initially on biological mechanisms and more recently on the interface of life style and psychosocial and endocrine determinants of human fertility. Over the past decade I deliberately broadened my research interests to encompass human wellbeing from a psychological and biological perspective. My research has resulted in over 80 papers in international journals, 130 abstracts in conference proceedings and editorship of four books based on conference proceedings.

Teaching
My teaching interests have similarly broadened, in part to help my understanding and development of IHS as a viable research and teaching discipline in its own right.
