Biography

I have been involved in economic geology research in the past 21 years at various universities in Germany, USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia. I have always enjoyed working in a team oriented environment and consequently supervised 15 Ph.D. students, 18 Honours students and worked together with five postdoctoral fellows on scale-integrated, multi-disciplinary projects related to metallic ore systems and associated fault zone networks. The significant contribution I have made to the field of economic geology relates to an increased understanding of the structural-hydrothermal alteration and fluid architecture and geochemical processes of orogenic gold mineralization in the Yilgarn craton in Western Australia, China, Alaska, Brazil, and Peru, Banded Iron Formation (BIF) related iron mineralization in Carajas, Corumba and Iron Quadrangle in Brazil and in the Hamersley Province in Western Australia and Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulfide (VHMS) deposits in the Pilbara craton, Western Australia.
Since taking up a staff position at UWA I have applied mineral system analyses to different metallic ore deposits such as gold, copper, and iron; In 2000 I published together with Dr. Cassidy a wide-ranging mineral system model for Archean orogenic gold deposits. Together with Dr. Peter Neumayr we established a model about structural and fluid connectivity in fault zone networks and associated pulses of gold mineralization through time. A joint project with Dr. Bateman resulted in a revised comprehensive model for the Golden Mile that emphasises the protracted structural-hydrothermal alteration and fluid evolution of 45 Ma. A postdoctoral project with Dr. Jochen Kolb on the southern Mindano Ridge epithermal gold system has provided for the first time an integrated structural framework and process that explains the location and geometry of the Co-O low-sulfidation epithermal deposit near the crustal-scale Philippine fault. A new postdoctoral project on the same district (Dr. Iris Sonntag) will elucidate the hydrothermal alteration and fluid flow of the same district.
Lately I have diversified my research activity and started an international iron ore research program together with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais at Belo Horizonte (Brazil). We are investigating the structural control, hydrothermal alteration and fluid flow in the giant Carajas and Iron Quadrangle iron ore provinces and comparing those with some of the giant Hamersley iron ore deposits (e.g., Tom Price and Paraburdoo in Western Australia). Preliminary results include the mapping of hydrothermal alteration zones around BIF- and jaspilite-related, high-grade (>63% Fe) iron ore bodies and definition of fluid pathways and chemistry for the ascending basinal brines and descending meteoric waters. Two PhD students from Brazil, one from the UWA and honours students are involved in this exciting venture. I also have a postdoctoral fellow studying the Archean BIF-hosted Koolyanobbing iron deposits in the Southern Cross Province in Western Australia (sponsored by Portman Ltd).
In 2008 I was the chief editor, together with Profs. Rosiere (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Gutzmer and Beukes (Rand University Johannesburg, South Africa), for a Review in Economic Geology book entitled: High-grade BIF-related iron ore deposits. This book will be published in conjunction with a SEG short course about the same topic, held in Johannesburg in July 2008. Further diversification includes a PhD projects on the structural control of the komatiite hosted Flying Fox nickel deposit (Jane Collins).
The results of these scientific endeavors have been published in book chapters and journals such as, for example, Economic Geology, Mineralium Deposita, Chemical Geology, Journal of Structural Geology or Geochimica Cosmochimica Acta.
