Biography
Prof. David Joyce heads the Inflammation Pharmacology research laboratory in the Pharmacology unit at UWA, with specific research interests in the drug control of inflammatory diseases. The major areas of research are TNF-alpha suppression, the role of TNF-alpha in inflammatory and survival signalling in inflammatory cells and reactive oxygen interactions with mitochondrial function and intracellular signalling pathways in inflammatory cells.
As well as heading the Inflammation Pharmacology research laboratory, Prof. Joyce is head of the Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology laboratory at PathWest Laboratory Medicine, and practices clinically in the areas of general internal medicine and clinical pharmacology & toxicology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Prof. Joyce also coordinates undergraduate medical teaching in pharmacology and therapeutics at UWA.
Key research
Signalling for activation and survival in macrophage cells
Adaptation of signalling to redox, hypoxic, hyperoxic and nutritional conditions in inflammatory cell environment
Mitochondrial uncoupling as a response to oxygen radical stress
