UWA aims to create a sustainable, sociable community for students in walking distance to the adjacent campus.
Quality student accommodation needs to support both the academic and social needs of students, and consider the surrounding neighbourhood, with elements such as appropriate planning, streetscape and overall design.
The University plays a pivotal role in the local community and provides amenities including sporting and cultural facilities available for the enjoyment of our neighbours as well as being a significant contributor to local businesses with many staff and students living, working and shopping locally.
UWA aims to become one of the Top 100 universities in the world by its centenary 2013, and one of the Top 50 in the world by 2050. Top universities in the world encourage a high proportion of students to live in residential colleges. Having students live and learn on campus enhances the student experience, allowing students to become fully involved in the intellectual and cultural activities of the University and the local community.
Since the 1960s, the University has been purchasing land to the south and west of the Crawley Campus and now owns a significant number of properties in this neighbourhood.
Proposals to build student accommodation in the area between the existing University and Broadway have been discussed with the City of Subiaco since the late 1980s.
A Student Accommodation facility has previously been proposed to ensure the most appropriate use of University owned land on a portion of the block bounded by Caporn Street, Fairway and Everett Street in Crawley.
UWA and its surrounds were indentified as a Strategic Specialised Centre by the State Government in the recently released Directions 2031 and Beyond, which signals the need for higher density development in the area.
Student accommodation close to campus will reduce the need to travel to and from campus, thereby reducing the demand for car parking and associated traffic impacts.
Having students live close to campus promotes sustainability principles and encourages the use of cycling, walking and public transport options.
The location of Caporn and Everett Street in particular is ideally located for students without cars as they can easily walk or cycle to campus and other local facilities and amenities.
As with all its buildings, the University is committed to delivering quality design and construction.
The selection of materials and choice of design elements will ensure the development positively contributes to the established streetscaoe as well as promote environmentally sustainable design and support the social and academic needs of students.
Onsite managed and serviced student housing will offer a range of amenity benefits in relation to the site and surrounding locality, including control of noise and enhanced security.
