Currie Hall Development

Further information

Project Status 2

The University is constructing additional student accommodation dwellings and associated amenities on its Currie Hall College site, Winthrop Avenue Crawley.

The expansion of Currie Hall commenced in 2011, with the construction of 15 dwellings with 24 rooms. This first stage of redevelopment at Currie Hall is now complete.

A major development to provide high-quality self-catering student accommodation and associated amenities has been approved by the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) and will be constructed at Currie Hall with works commencing late 2011. The targeted completion date is December 2012, with rooms ready for occupancy in semester one 2013.

The design of the accommodation is in accord with the existing buildings and environment and creates opportunities for study, social interaction, recreation, and quiet reflection.

The new development will accommodate an additional 515 students in high quality self-catering student accommodation, comprising of three new buildings:

  • A northern building providing one bedroom apartments, located separately and discreetly with views to Kings Park; and
  • A central building and a southern building providing studio apartments.

Student Amenities

Featuring a modern fit out, the design will rejuvenate and complement the existing buildings and provide students studying at UWA with new amenities close to campus including:

  • Common rooms and a common-use kitchen/dining area for each bedroom cluster
  • Multi-purpose rooms including media rooms, games room and billiards room
  • Visitor lobbies and a formal common room
  • New central courtyard
  • Café and alfresco areas
  • Laundry facilities

Landscape

The development has a key focus on landscape and presents the opportunity to expand upon the theme of the 'university in a park'. Three major courtyard spaces will be created with the opportunity to significantly enhance the landscape environment.

The landscape will provide a variety of outdoor amenities to cater for passive and active recreation, student engagement, as well as areas for quiet reflection.

Car Parking

The close proximity of Currie Hall to the University Crawley campus and amenities such as public transport reduces the need to travel, thereby reducing demand for car parking and associated traffic impacts.

The development includes undercroft parking and at the rear of the Currie Hall site, as well as secure bicycle storage.
